Many automobile manufacturers are already working on ways of charging electric cars by way of induction, allowing the batteries to be topped up even while the car’s parked. Magnetic contacts are embedded in the floor, effectively turning the ground into a power sender and making cables and electrical outlets totally unnecessary. With the charging devices incorporated into the flooring, damage and vandalism are ruled out.
Inductive power transmission allows electricity to be channeled through a variety of different materials. In the future cars will use a minimum of cabling, while still providing optimal power supply throughout the vehicle. Energy can even be passed through plastic and glass, for example in powering the electric windows. The car’s overall weight is reduced, as is fuel consumption.
